Chennai joins the list of Indian metropolitans accessing a metro network

29th July 2015 Monday Chennai joined the league of metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Jaipur which have extensive metro rail systems.



The Chennai Metro Rail Limited's passenger services between Alandur and Koyambedu was inaugurated via video conference by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The launched metro stretch has seven stations; Koyambedu, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, Ekkattuthangal and Alandur -- and CMRL's depot at Koyambedu being connected via commuting of exactly 30 minutes. The second route is the ten kilometres elevated stretch which is a metro corridor that runs for about 22km connecting Chennai Central with St Thomas Mount.


Started in 2009, the 14,600-crore INR project is started after numerous delays. The two corridors will be further joined with the metro rail expected to cover 32 stations in the coming years. In a bid to provide a seamless travel, the metro rail has been designed to connect Chennai Airport, Chennai Central railway station, Egmore Station, CMBT and MRTS. Work is going on a rapid paceon networks for elevated travel as well as underground stretch.
